Target a specific audience
If you don’t know who your audience is, how are you ever going to know if you’re hitting the right notes? Part of the marketing process, and probably the most important, is RESEARCH. You MUST define your demographic (you know, the people who actually give a damn about whatever you’re selling/writing/etc). Once you’ve defined them, you can customize your style and approach. What’s equally important is that you don’t exclude everyone else. Why? Because they may not know they’re interested until they become interested. It’s your job to lead them in and get them on your bandwagon.
Be a thought leader
What is a “thought leader” anyway? To quote David Meerman Scott’s New Rules of Marketing & PR:
“A thought leader, instead of selling something directly, tells the world that you are smart, that you understand the market very well, and that you might be a person or organization that would be valuable to do business with.”
A thought leader is selfless – not promoting themselves, but rather, what they can do for you – by being engaged and involved in your community, a thought leader knows what you want WHEN you want it. Timing is everything.
Be authentic and transparent
The most important thing…Hands down. The minute you become someone or something you’re not – you’ll expose yourself as a total fraud. It might work for a while but eventually the truth will come out and odds are, it won’t be pretty when it does. Know your identity and own it – be authentic, genuine, and transparent in every single thing that you do.
Create lots of links
Link to your own site – link to others – in short, link like a maniac. People love links – they love to explore and find new things – whether it is digging through the archives of your own blog/website (interlinking is a prime SEO practice) or discovering something new – incorporate links early and often in everything you do and leave breadcrumbs for your community to explore new paths on their own.
Participate. Engage. Listen
Listening is priority number one. Above all else, you have to know when to shut up and listen to your community, listen to your competition, and pay attention to what others are saying about you. By listening, you’ll know exactly when the right time is to engage – the right time to say “hello” – the right time to close a sale. Listen first, participate second, then follow it up with the engagement.
Make it easy to find you (everywhere)
A blog or website is a platform created by in individual. I may not know about you – but when I discover a great new website, I want to know who’s behind it. I want to follow them on Twitter, subscribe to their RSS, send them an affectionate “you are awesome” email…you get the picture. People want to know YOU – Make this EASY to do with OBVIOUS calls to action and ENCOURAGE people to do it.
Experiment. Screw up. Learn. Experiment again.
The only time you fail is when you DON’T try. Blogging and Social Media is great because it allows you to try new things. If it isn’t working, great, tweak it and try something else – or abandon the effort and try something new. THERE ARE NO EXPERTS in Social Media – its one great big learning experience for EVERYONE at the party.
Don’t dwindle down the path of the Dark Side, no matter how tempting or easy it may seem to sell yourself out – side the those of the light and do things the right way. Be genuine, use the tools at your disposal for good, and never be afraid to challenge yourself to trying new things.

Welcome change
Accept the fact that change is difficult. And so, if you’re going to be a leader, what does your own attitude about change have to be? Positive.
Emphasize communication
Supervising employees is about building relationships. The most important single skill that can be learned, practiced, improved and evaluated is communication. You’ve got to make communication your key to building relationships.
Have clearly understood procedures, policies and rules
Whatever the critical tasks are, teach the procedures. Leaving employees to figure out how to do what they’ve been hired to do is a sign of poor leadership. Make procedures understandable, practical and simple. Have clear policies and rules to guide and explain the whys.
Be fair
Consistently enforce rules and in all cases avoid bias, dishonesty and injustice. Doing this means you will be accused of being unreasonable at times, because you will make decisions based on careful reasoning, whereas employees often make decisions based on emotion.
Show empathy
Just because you have to make decisions based on clearly defined policies and procedures doesn’t mean you shouldn’t empathize with your employees. Empathy is understanding the other person’s situation.
Display trust
Believe in your employee’s word, their integrity, their strengths, their assurance…in other words, be in a position where you can trust the people around you.
Continue learning
You will never know all you need to know and there isn’t a supervisor out there who is ready to manage a 2012 business…but you will need to know how eventually. You’ve got to continue learning to be an effective boss.
Be flexible
Adjust your leadership style for each person you supervise. Delegate as much authority and responsibility as you can. That’s part of being flexible.
Envision the success you’re working to have

Opening a newbusiness can be fun, exciting and challenging. It can also be a very rewarding time. There’s no feeling quite like seeing the store build-out or upgrades being completed and then the merchandise displays and fixtures being added. Finally the signage and merchandise are added. All of a sudden you realize the store is even nicer than you imagined.
Everything is ready and then you open for business. With the store open and operating there seem to be more tasks than you ever expected. You are busy from morning until night. Everything seems to be going well, but you are just so busy. As the business owner it is fine to dig in and go to work. It is important to realize that you are the owner, however. Don’t get so involved in day-to-day activities that you fail to take a step back and really examine your business.
In this article I present 5 steps to maintaining healthy business growth when opening your new business.
1. Establish a store walk-through schedule and routine. One of the often overlooked steps every owner/manager can take is documenting and then scheduling store walk-throughs. A store walk-through is a process where designated employees walk the store aisle-by-aisle. They straighten merchandise displays, return merchandise to its proper location, and spot sweep or vacuum. All of this is targeted to keep the store clean, fresh and clutter-free. By assigning this task to employees, you can focus on operational efficiency and business growth and profit.
2. Talk with your employees. More often than not, your employees will be aware of problems and concerns of the operation. It might be customer complaints, or customer requests for merchandise you don’t carry. It might be ideas for improving sales or operating efficiency. You never know what your employees might come up with unless you routinely speak with them and solicit their ideas and input on improving your business. Invest the time to do this on a routine basis. You’ll be happy you did.
3. Talk with your customers. After opening your business you’ll soon learn only your customers know what they want and need. The best way to find out about this is to ask. Personally take the time to speak with a few customers every day. Solicit their feedback on the shopping experience they are having in your store. Ask about improvements you can make. Be sure to always solicit inputs about products they’d like to see you carry in your store. Ask your employees, especially cashiers, to solicit the same kinds of information. Then take time and really examine the feedback you are receiving.
4. Examine the operating data. It does take time to examine the operational results of your business. However, this is something you should schedule and do routinely. If you are unfamiliar with some of the data, ask your CPA to help by reviewing and explaining it to you. The true measure of your performance is the operational data and the final results for each week, month, quarter and year.
5. Use your advisors and professionals to help keep growth on-track. One of the best ways to succeed is to surround yourself with capable and competent advisors and professionals. Develop a team that is strong in training and experience in retailing. Focus on obtaining team members who have strengths where you lack. Often times there are organizations and resources available to help if you don’t know the right resources. Assembling this team can be invaluable to your final success. Don’t forget to include a well-experienced CPA and attorney to round-out the membership.

Are you addicted to Facebook or Twitter? As social media continues to grow, details are starting to surface about people’s behaviors and consumption of information in the social space.
A recent independent study by Retrevo Gadgetology revealed some interesting stats about our love for social media sites. The study asked 1,000 users the “when, where and what” regarding social media sites like Twitter and Facebook. The stats suggest we just might be completely addicted to social networking (raise your hand if you tweet from the bathroom!).
It comes as no surprise that the “under age 25″ users were more active during off hours. Here’s a breakdown of nighttime and morning activity:

Yes, anytime I wake up during the night.
- Under 25: 19%
- Over 25: 11%
Yes, sometimes when I wake up during the night.
- Under 25: 27%
- Over 25: 20%
Yes, as soon as I wake up in the morning.

- Over 25: 21%
Will Twitter and Facebook take over the morning news show?
Maybe not anytime soon, but 16% of those under age 25 and 15% of those over 25 turn to their social sites for their morning news. If this trend continues, the morning news as we know it today could see some major changes.
Are iPhone users more addicted to social media sites?
iPhone users were extremely active on social sites at all hours of the day. The study does not give solid reasons for this, but speculates, “We don’t know if it’s the device making it so easy to do social media things or the personality of an iPhone owner, but iPhone owners stand out in this study as more involved with social media; they use Facebook and Twitter more often and in more places.”
Here are some other stats worth checking out:
- 56%: Social media users check Facebook at least once a day.
- 12%: Social media users check Facebook every couple of hours.
- 40%: Respondents who said they didn’t mind being interrupted for a message.
- 32%: Respondents who said using the sites was not off limits while eating a meal.
- 7%: Respondents who said they’d check out a message during an intimate moment.
When asked about being interrupted by an electronic message, here’s what respondents said:

With the growing popularity of social media, there’s no doubt we’ll continue to see a rise in many of these (sometimes strange) behaviors. Perhaps we should be asking ourselves, when is it all too much?
#2: What Do Social Media Users Really Want?
Here’s some useful data for marketers and brands looking to leverage the power of social media. A recent analysis of 287,090 impressions by the online advertising network Chitika delivered some interesting behavior stats for four popular networking sites, Facebook, Twitter, Digg and MySpace. The study compared the genres of sites that receive traffic from the four social sites.
As many have already speculated, the users from each site have very specific taste in the type of information they consume. According to Chitika, “Facebook and Twitter users want news, Digg users have more eclectic taste, and MySpace users want to hear primarily about celebrities and video games.” Interestingly, Twitter users actually were the largest consumers of news sites at 47%, compared to Facebook’s 28%.

As you can see, the universal interest across all networks is celebrity and entertainment. Also, MySpace is the only site to have a complete absence of the news genre.
By continuing to study user intent and traffic source by tracking the visits to different sites, marketers and brands are better able to create content that satisfies the interests of the social network user. This can be powerful data for any marketer when applied intelligently.

The Harmonized Sales Tax will improve British Columbia’s economy, build productivity and competitiveness and provide the foundation for more jobs, Finance Minister Colin Hansen announced today.
“A strong economy is necessary to create the jobs we need to provide revenue for essential public services like health and education. The vast majority of businesses can recover the HST they pay and remove the hidden taxes that get passed on to and paid by consumers. These savings will keep prices competitive, spur investment, create new jobs and boost our province’s economy” said Hansen.
One of the sectors in British Columbia that will benefit immediately is the agriculture industry. The BC Agriculture Council predicts there will be an estimated benefit of $15-$20 million on reducing farm input costs. The agri-food industry is an important contributor to the provincial economy with more than 225 food commodities produced in B.C., totalling over $22 billion annually in consumer sales and supporting over 305,000 jobs.
“Harmonization will have a significant and positive impact on agriculture overall, and is consistent with what our members have been calling for,” said Garnet Etsell, chair of the BC Agriculture Council. “The HST will put B.C. farmers on a more level playing field with farmers in Alberta and in other provinces that currently enjoy the advantages of a harmonized sales tax.”
Sales tax harmonization alone is expected to result in an $11.5-billion increase in capital investment and a net increase of 113,000 jobs by the end of the coming decade.
“I’m confident the HST, combined with the most competitive corporate taxes in North America, will generate long-term economic growth for British Columbians,” said Hansen. “The HST will significantly lower the tax on new investment, helping to create jobs and new opportunities in every region of the province.”
B.C. businesses will save about $2 billion in costs through the HST. In addition to the Agriculture industry, the construction industry will realize $880 million in tax savings, $140 million for manufacturing, $210 million for the transportation industry, $140 million for the forestry sector, and $80 million for mining, oil and gas. Businesses will save time and an additional $150 million annually in administration costs by collecting and remitting only one tax.
For about 80 per cent of consumer spending in B.C., there will be no change in tax with harmonization because many goods are either not taxable under HST or they are already subject to the PST. Government of Canada Ban on Flavoured Tobacco Products Now in Full Force
Effective today, the sale of cigarettes, little cigars and blunt wraps that contain specified additives, including most flavouring agents, is prohibited. With this latest ban, key changes to the Tobacco Act that protect young people from the marketing practices of tobacco companies are now fully in force.
“The Government of Canada has delivered on its promise to protect young people from tobacco industry marketing practices that encourage them to smoke,” said the Honourable Leona Aglukkaq, Minister of Health. “The amendments to the Tobacco Act position Canada as a world leader in tobacco control.”
The Cracking Down on Tobacco Marketing Aimed at Youth Act, which became law on October 8, 2009, included a transition period for retailers and manufacturers to adjust to some of the changes. On April 6, a ban on the sale, including retail and duty-free, of little cigars and blunt wraps packaged in less than 20 units, came into effect.
The Act also extended restrictions on the advertising of tobacco products. Immediately following Royal Assent of the legislation in October, an exception in the Tobacco Act that allowed advertising to be placed in publications with an adult readership of at least 85 per cent was removed. This measure responded to a resurgence of tobacco advertising in free entertainment weeklies and daily newspapers that are accessible to youth.
As this prohibition comes into force, Health Canada will be actively monitoring compliance among all levels of the supply chain, including manufacturers, distributors, importers and retailers. When Health Canada inspectors have reasonable grounds to believe that the Act has been contravened, appropriate measures are taken. Inspectors have the authority to issue warnings, seize the product, or refer the case for prosecution.
The Government of Canada is also taking steps to prevent the illegal sale of tobacco products, including those prohibited under the Tobacco Act. On May 28, 2010, Public Safety Canada, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, Canada Border Services Agency and the Canada Revenue Agency announced a $20-million investment to combat contraband tobacco and reduce the amount of tobacco consumed. The availability of cheap, illegal tobacco products undermines many of the public health measures put in place to reduce tobacco use.
